To be completely honest, bamboo flooring isn’t the best choice for your home, especially in Michigan.
Although bamboo wood flooring does look nice, the installation won’t hold up for as long as natural hardwood flooring or laminate would.
Here’s why.
Bamboo Flooring Pros and Cons
The first problem bamboo flooring will face in Michigan is climate. Our climate here is not suitable for bamboo flooring to perform at its peak because it experiences so much expansion and contraction issues. Why buy flooring that will need to renovated and renewed within five years?
A small side note: the bamboo flooring you come across in Michigan, no matter what store, is most likely not even real bamboo.
Secondly, unlike natural hardwood flooring, bamboo wood flooring isn’t even real wood. This means that it’s not a solid product, resulting in the possibility of delamination. Even the manufacturing process is inconsistent, so the quality of the product is inconsistent as well.
Thirdly, bamboo flooring is relatively thin, so refinishing is out of the question. If you happen to damage the floor in any way, you either have to get it replaced or deal with a damaged floor. This is why there aren’t many bamboo flooring installations done in this country today.
On the plus side, bamboo does look nice and is installed just like wood, and there is a good variety of colors to choose from. But even then, it still won’t perform well in Michigan’s climate.
Hardwood and Laminate Saves the Day
To get that wood flooring you desire so much, you’re better off sticking to either hardwood flooring or laminate floors.
Natural hardwood products are going to have much less of an acclimation time than any bamboo wood, and the performance will be ten times better.
