We get asked “what is the best vacuum cleaner” on a daily basis. That question is a little tricky to answer because it all depends on the product you have.

Some vacuums will work better on certain types of carpet, so it’s important to do your research before you buy a cheap Walmart vacuum cleaner and expect it to work wonders.

To make it easy for you, here’s a little cheat sheet.

What are the Best Vacuum Cleaners?

Like we said earlier, this really depends on the type of carpeting you have installed in your home. The fact of the matter, however, is that you need a good vacuum cleaner to keep your carpeting in good shape.

Vacuuming is an essential piece of the carpet cleaning maintenance program. It’s required to make your floors look good and last for a long time. Without it, carpeting tends to ugly out quickly, and problems will occur more commonly.

To help you out, here’s what you will want to look for in a vacuum based off of these specific styles:

Frieze Carpet
When looking for the best vacuum for frieze carpet, keep in mind that some friezes can be expensive, so you’ll want to take great care of it. Your best bet is an upright vacuum cleaner that has the option to adjust the height settings. Make sure to keep the beater brush off as well to avoid damaging the fibers.

If you happen to find a lightweight vacuum with power settings that you can adjust, that may be the perfect cleaner for your floors. Just make to choose one with a strong motor.

Vacuuming this style of carpet has a few specifics you need to know due to the way the fiber is designed. To vacuum berber style carpet without damaging it, pay attention to the rotating brush. You’ll want to turn this off because the rotating brush has been known to pull out and fray the looped fibers, ruining the weave of the carpet.

You will also want to find a vacuum that has a good amount of suction power. This is the only way to convincingly remove the dirt stuck in the fibers. In short, you’ll want to find a vacuum that has an on and off function for the rotating brush and also with at least 100 AW suction power.

Plush Carpet

Although plush carpet types are known to be the most luxurious carpets out there, it can be the most difficult to keep clean. To keep plush carpeting clean, you’re going to need a vacuum with the following requirements:

  • Adjustable height settings
  • Rotating brushes
  • Strong airflow

Most plush carpets stain easily, so a rotating brush will help break the stains up and remove them. Since the vacuum will have strong airflow, the dirt will be lifted up quite easily.

We recommend a Kirby Upright vacuum cleaner. It’s the only one we endorse, and for good reason.

Joe Zago, our President, had this to say about the Kirby Upright:

“The upright vacuum offered by Kirby is the ONLY choice in my opinion because it is simply the only vacuum of its kind that does exactly what it is supposed to do… clean! Because it has nearly 3 times the amount of airflow (air movement), it can remove much more dirt, sand, and grit from deeper in the carpet pile. In addition to that, there is no beater bar to damage the fiber or twist of the yarn.”

“The hard coarse brushes on most other vacuums cause more abrasion when the brush swipes across the tips of the carpet causing the carpet to lose some of its twist and structural integrity. The Kirby has much softer flexible bristles in its brush-roll which will not damage the carpet.  A Kirby is metal and lasts over 40 years where as most plastic vacuums are disposable and need to be re-purchased every 3-5 years. Its better to buy once and buy right even if it costs more up front than to buy useless junk over and over again.”

When your Vacuum Cleaner just isn’t Cutting it…

If your vacuum isn’t getting all the stains and grime you see, your carpeting may be the problem.

Think about this for a second. When is the last time you had your carpeting renewed?

Most types of carpeting last for about 10-15 years with proper maintenance and care. If your carpeting is older than your great-grandmother, it’s time to get new flooring.

That’s where we come in.
