Are Carpet Seams Driving You Crazy?

New carpet installations are rarely done in one piece. What many homeowners don’t know is, carpet rolls come in specific sizes and their dimensions vary from vendor to vendor.

A roll of carpet might be in the dimensions of 12 feet by 20 yards (example). That means, if a designated room is 14×14, seaming carpet together will be needed. Seams are common in almost all installations unless the room is small.

Also, every room in your home is a different size. The carpet is cut as close as possible to the size without having excessive waste. Any extra carpet pieces can be saved or used in smaller areas like closets.

The Carpet Guys strive to make each and every installation as perfect as possible. We educate our homeowners about carpet seams so they understand what they are. We also plant those seams in areas where they will be less visible to the untrained eyes.

Trust us, endlessly searching for tips on how to fix carpet seams isn’t going to help very much. You need the pros.

What Causes Carpet Seams to Show?

Usually referred to as “peaking” there are many reasons for carpet seams to show. Some of the main sources are:

  • Seams not sealed properly during carpet installation
  • Too wide of a gap in between seams
  • Unlevel seaming
  • Seams placed in direct lighting making them easy to see
  • Failing to match carpet colors and designs
  • Seams placed in high traffic areas

Other causes not related to installation:

  • Pet accidents or liquid spills that lift the carpeting
  • Pulling or tugging on carpet where seams are bonded
  • Constant moisture exposure to area
