The Carpet Guys – In your opinion, what is the best way to remodel a bathroom for a low price?
Barbi Stalburg Kasoff – There are many cabinet lines available today that offer great looks at a more reasonable price point. Years ago, it was difficult to find a wood-grain laminate cabinet without going fully custom. Today, even big box stores carry lines that allow a homeowner to have a variety of design options. To save money, we also incorporate inexpensive items like mirrors or cabinetry hardware that can add a lot of visual interest without breaking the bank. Paint can also be another way of changing the look of a bathroom for a very small cost, instead of tiling an entire wall or using wallpaper.
The Carpet Guys – What do you recommend for bathroom remodeling?
Barbi Stalburg Kasoff – For most bathrooms, we actually rework the space’s layout and do a complete remodel. It’s funny how a simple change of layout can improve the use of the space. We work with experienced contractors to ensure that our design comes to fruition.
The Carpet Guys – Is wood a good bathroom flooring idea in your opinion?
Barbi Stalburg Kasoff – We don’t generally use wood flooring in a bathroom. The moisture content in a bathroom is much higher than other areas of the home, and wood floors naturally have expansion and contraction. One particular client in Huntington Woods had to redo the wood floors in her entire master suite due to the buckling of the existing wood in her bathroom. She opted to keep the wood even through renovating the bathroom. Depending on the client, wood flooring can be used but we inform them on the precautions that need to be taken as well as the maintenance required.
The Carpet Guys – How long does it take to remodel a bathroom on average?
Barbi Stalburg Kasoff – Most bathroom remodels take about 3-4 weeks give or take. Of course, many factors come in to play such as material availability as well as scheduling the trades. Every project will have its share of surprises, but it’s all about trying to foresee an issue before it arises.
The Carpet Guys – What should you keep in mind when beginning your bathroom remodel?
Barbi Stalburg Kasoff – Our first piece of advice to each and every client is to identify your own particular needs for the space. Will this be a dressing area as well? A retreat or simply a more functional room? A bathroom can include a closet, seating area, makeup station and many other options. Know where you want to spend your money then decide where you can cut costs to achieve the space you desire.
