Understanding how it’s made just may be that last little bit of information that pushes you to consider getting laminate.

The Process Of Manufacturing Laminate Flooring

The introduction of laminate flooring products now makes it easier and more affordable for homeowners to replace old and outdated carpet, tile, or linoleum. Before deciding if a laminate product is the best choice, it’s a good idea to understand how it is manufactured. Here is a quick look at what is involved, and what applications are best suited for a laminate based product.

It’s All About Layers

When laminate flooring is built, several different products that are stacked on top of one another in layers. The first layer is a plastic based material that helps provide stability for the flooring product while acting as a water repellent.

The second layer is the core of the product and is constructed of fiberboard mixed with plastic resin particles to further increase durability in the event of water exposure. The third layer is the visible section of the flooring product, which typically resembles wood.

Lastly, the manufacturer will place a transparent protective layer on top, which helps prevent stains and damage to the surface.

Pressure Makes Perfect

Once all of the layers are set in place, it will then be processed through a press that experts up to 600 pounds of pressure per square inch. The item will be pressed for up to 30 seconds to ensure a strong bond. This not only adheres the layers into one amalgamation, but it helps ensure the product can withstand normal wear and tear like a high-quality laminate floor should.

If the design of the flooring material includes a textured surface, then the press used will have a top plate that will stamp the texture into the upper layer during the pressurization process.

Curing and Cutting the Laminate

Once the boards are moved from the pressure treating machine, they will need to cure. This ensures that the boards will not swell or shrink during installation. Most manufacturers cure their products in a moisture controlled environment for up to 24 hours.

Once the boards are fully cured, they will then be cut into planks. The size of the planks depends on the style of the finished product but range from 3 inches to one foot in width.

This process is how you’re able to get such good product like Mohawk laminate flooring and other popular brands and styles.
