Victorian Style Interior Design Characteristics

Victorian is a general term used to refer to features of design from 1837 to 1901, during Queen Victoria’s reign. The Victorian era interior style pulls inspiration from nature, geometry, theory and various other ways.

Flooring and mid-toned polished floorboards are a distinctive look in a Victorian home. A great flooring to install is luxury vinyl plank flooring. LVP offers many designs to choose from that looks like natural flooring materials including:

  • Wood
  • Stone
  • Tile

The different styles of luxury vinyl plank products provide you with an array of different options to choose from. Once the floors are installed, use a large patterned rug in the middle of the room around the border so the flooring is still visible. This is quite popular in Victorian interior design.

Wallpaper was very popular back in the 1840’s. The lighter colors were used on the walls while the darker colors were used in the décor.

Victorian interior design favors soft tones and leaves out the bright and vivid colors. Rose pink, gray, lavender, or sage are fantastic colors. Using cream backgrounds or deep rich browns, teals, plums, and golds are great examples as well.

There are two common fabrics in a Victorian home. One is silk damask or velvet, which would be great for curtains. The other is a busy patterned floral print on toile or chintz, which is wonderful for cushions, seat covers or pillows. Patterns throughout the room are a must. Along with the Oriental rug, use flora and fauna to geometric patterns. Soft lighting is given off by using decorative lamps. It adds to the ambiance of the room.

The Victorian design style incorporates excessive accessories. Decorations should be placed everywhere. The Victorian design is very elaborate and involves every surface to be covered. Common items used for this purpose include:

  • Picture frames
  • Extravagantly ornate décor
  • China
  • Flowers
  • Vases
  • Souvenirs
  • Bowls
  • Candles

Lace was very popular and found draped over tables, seatbacks, and mantelpieces. Button-backed chairs, ottomans, and chaises are the images of the Victorian era. Keep an eye out for architectural features that you can incorporate into your rooms. The Victorian furniture ranged from delicate to massive. Adding dado rails, wainscoting, paneling, and crown molding will also round out the look.

With all the knowledge you’ve just gained, creating a Victorian styled home will be a cinch, but getting your floors will be even easier.
