Sheet Vinyl versus Vinyl Tile: Which is Best for My Home?

The process of purchasing new flooring leaves many homeowners feeling exasperated and overwhelmed. Buying new flooring might seem less daunting if it were no more complicated than picking a color, but homeowners must take their lifestyle, budgetary constraints, and expectations into consideration, too.

If you’re giving thought to installing a vinyl product in your home but you aren’t sure if sheet vinyl or luxury vinyl tile is the right choice for you, you should give serious thought to how long you expect your new flooring to last, and which area of your home you intend to have new flooring installed in.

If the area is smaller than 12’x 12’, it may be more advantageous for you to install a sheet vinyl product, as this will reduce the percentage of waste material. One of the biggest downsides to installing sheet vinyl instead of a luxury vinyl tile is that sheet vinyl doesn’t make for a good D-I-Y project.

Sheet vinyl is bulky, difficult to transport, and easily damaged. If you have your heart set on putting a sheet vinyl product in your home, you’ll be much better off hiring a professional flooring company to handle the install for you.

Alternatively, if you plan to install vinyl flooring in a larger area of your home, choosing a luxury vinyl plank instead of a sheet vinyl product offers greater versatility in options for styles, colors, and designs.

Also, nine times out of ten, luxury vinyl products outperform their sheet vinyl counterparts when installed in high traffic areas.

Another upside to choosing luxury vinyl tile over sheet vinyl is that luxury vinyl tiles and planks are much easier to replace if a portion of your flooring incurs damage. Repairing sheet vinyl usually means removing the damaged portion of the floor and trying to patch the area; due to UV fading, getting the new flooring to match the old flooring leaves most homeowners feeling underwhelmed by the finished result. In short, if your sheet vinyl incurs damage, you’re better off replacing the whole floor.
