Polyester Carpet Vs. Nylon Carpet

When purchasing carpet, it is important that homeowners understand the difference between polyester carpet fiber and nylon carpet fiber. Many people wonder which type of material is better and will work well in their home. To figure this out, let's compare and contrast the positives and negatives of both nylon carpet and polyester carpet.

Nylon Carpet

In 1935, the DuPont Company developed a developed a family of synthetic polymers that they dubbed nylon carpet. As far as fibers of carpeting go, it is considered the most resilient above all other fibers. Essentially, resiliency of fibers in talking about how when the material is stepped on, rather then crushing, it returns to the original form. Being as resilient as it is, it keeps the carpeting looking fresh and new, even if it undergoes heavy foot traffic.

As strong as nylon carpet is, there are a few downsides that homeowners should be aware of. These downside consist of:

  • The colors of nylon are very limited, leaving little choices for those who purchase it.
  • Nylon stains very easily, making maintenance more of a pain.
  • The prices of nylon carpeting can be quite expensive.
  • Nylon is not a very soft material.

Polyester Carpet

Polyester (or PET Polyester), carpet has been on the rise of popular carpeting being purchased. With the advancements in technology, it has risen to the ranks of some of the most prominent carpeting material in the past five years. Polyester has many benefits that it can offer to a home. These benefits include:

  • The fibers are made completely out of recycled plastic bottles. This technological advancement makes this material Eco-friendly.
  • It comes in a wide variety of colors allowing it to match almost any kind of décor.
  • PET is abrasion resistant and fade resistant, allowing the carpet to keep the color.
  • Polyester is extremely stain resistant, making it a perfect carpet for kids and pets.
  • It is a soft material and comes at a relatively inexpensive price.

The only issues with polyester is that the fibers are not super resilient, so crushing and matting are possibilities. With the right type of cleaning, however, the look and feel can be kept.

If you plan on getting new carpet installed, we recommend that you go with polyester carpet. The benefits are very evident and the drawbacks are minimal. Just be sure to pick the correct installer to put the carpeting in place. A poor installation job can ruin the quality and life of the carpet.
